Message by António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, on the occasion of Nelson Mandela International Day 2025.

Image
Nelson Mandela’s extraordinary life showed how one person can transform oppression, struggle and subjugation into reconciliation, social justice and unity. Just as Madiba’s life was a triumph of the human spirit, his legacy is a call to rekindle our global commitment to peace, justice and human dignity. This year’s theme reminds us that the power to end poverty and inequality is in all our hands. Mandela believed in the power of collective, grassroots action. He knew that ordinary people could bend the arc of history, and that lasting change started not in capitals and boardrooms, but in neighbourhoods and communities. Mandela’s life of service and progress continues to inspire our own efforts at the United Nations, as we celebrate our 80th anniversary. On this important day, and every day, let us all be guided by Madiba’s lifelong commitment to freedom, justice, equality and the rights that belong to every person on earth. António Guterres, UN Secretary-General, Message on the o...

Take Action and Inspire Change!

Image
As Mandela said: It is in your hands to make of the world a better place . And so, every year on Mandela Day, we ask people around the world to take action and inspire change by making a difference in their communities. If you would like to donate your own time to public service , here are some things you can do to take action and inspire change : Make a new friend. Get to know someone from a different cultural background. Only through mutual understanding can we rid our communities of intolerance and xenophobia. Read to someone who can’t. Visit a local home for the blind and open up a new world for someone else. Help out at the local animal shelter. Dogs without homes still need a walk and a bit of love. Help someone get a job. Put together and print a CV for them, or help them with their interview skills. Many terminally ill people have no one to speak to. Take a little time to have a chat and bring some sunshine into their lives. Get tested for HIV and encourage your partner to do ...
